A three-year-old boy was left with 'global brain damage' and is on life support after allegedly being beaten to the brink of death by his mother's boyfriend.
Dawson Zamora was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries on October 14 after the brutal beating, according to court documents obtained by KDFW.
The toddler suffered severe brain trauma, a brain bleed, was bruised all over his body, and had stomach and chest wounds among other horrific injuries hospital staff said.
Dawson's mother Chelsea Berg, 30, left him in the care of her boyfriend Christopher Alexander on the morning of the alleged assault.
Alexander, 30, took the child to the hospital that afternoon after allegedly hearing a 'thud' and finding Dawson injured, an affidavit for Alexander's arrest said.
Hospital staff notified police after determining the toddler's injuries were inconsistent with the explanation the boyfriend provided.
Alexander was arrested two days later and charged with injury to a child. Berg was also taken into custody on a a charge of injury to a child by omission.
Dawson's father Dahrian Zamora said the boy has shown 'no improvement' and claimed that scans conducted at the hospital revealed 'prior abuse'.
Zamora was notified by child protective services on Wednesday that Dawson was in the intensive care unit and fighting for his life.
Dawson underwent emergency treatment but has 'global brain damage' and is on life-after being admitted last week, according to Zamora.
'He was beaten so bad that he was beaten to death,' he told KFDA. '[Alexander] did beat my son to death, that he did kill him. But when he got to the lobby of Medical Center McKinney, he was already dead.'
Zamora further alleged that CT and MRI scans revealed 'prior bruising that was not coinciding with the healing process' of the boy's current injuries.
'He was beaten before this attack. The attack that killed him wasn't the only attack. There's prior abuse in the home,' the father added.
Zamora, who has since been granted custody of both his two children, claimed his ex-wife knew Alexander posed a danger to their family.
Alexander was recently indicted for stalking and had previous convictions of theft and unlawful restraint.
'He had an ankle monitor, Chelsea knew that. He was dealing with stalking allegations, Chelsea knew that,' Zamora said.
Alexander was jailed on charges of injury to a child, stalking and tamper/fabricate evidence with intent to impair the investigation. His bond has been revoked.
Berg, who swore to police that Dawson was uninjured when she left him with Alexander, was arrested for injury to a child by omission on October 14.
She was granted $100,000 bond and released. She is not allowed to come within 500 yards of her children.
