Three men have been filmed allegedly attacking a 14-year-old girl before one of them appeared to brag about it on social media - but it was the teenager, not the men, who was arrested at the scene. The alleged assault took place on Foster Road, near Mount Sheridan Plaza in Cairns, about 9.10pm on Monday night.
A witness, who claimed the men stomped on her head, said they initially thought the group was trying to catch an animal before realising it was a child.
'One of them had a stick and then one of them was pretty much kicking the girl in the head as she's laying down defenceless,' the witness told the National Indigenous Times.
They said one man held the girl while another stomped on her head. The witness said they began recording after police arrived.
One of the men reportedly drove away when officers turned up, while two remained at the scene. The witness claimed police then 'stood her up and handcuffed her.'
'She's trying to explain like that these three men have come and started on her … they've just still handcuffed her and chucked her in the back of the police car,' the witness told the publication.
The witness described the scene as 'confronting' and said violence against Indigenous women was a 'strong' problem in Cairns. The 14-year-old was taken to Cairns Hospital and is understood to be recovering from her injuries.
On Wednesday, one of the men allegedly involved in the attack appeared to brag on social media, posting: 'Ahaha you get what you deserve wannabe little hoodrats rock a bedroom window that's what you get.'
Screenshots also showed him writing: 'I'll say my bit. I had 7 girls come throw a rock through my mum's window about 8:45 Monday night.
'And then the same 7 girls want to come back and try to do it again. So I get in my car because it's not the first time this mob have done st to my house and put on a chase me and dad got one dad help (held) her down while I stomped the fk out of her head.
'I'm a fair person show me and my family respect and you will get it back simple.'
Police confirmed on Wednesday that two men had been arrested and charged over the alleged assault of two girls, aged 14 and 16, in Mount Sheridan on September 22.
A 21-year-old man has been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed and in company.
A 53-year-old man has been charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm. Both are due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on October 10.
In a statement to Daily Mail Australia, police said: 'Investigations are ongoing into the wilful damage of the window and separately any assault that occurred during the disturbance.'
'Police take all offences against members of the community seriously and are committed to ensuring those involved are put before the courts,' a spokesperson said.
