Cambridge United impressed to hold off Manchester United for 90 minutes – and secure themselves a cash-generating replay at Old Trafford.
Although Manchester United dominated possession in the first half, Cambridge were by far the livelier side, with winger Ryan Donaldson a constant threat from set pieces and open play.
Tom Coulson went closest, heading over David De Gea’s bar from inches out after a melee in the box.
Manchester United’s line-up of expensive superstars were once again disappointing. Angel Di Maria struggled with the conditions, with one of his shots literally flying out of the ground, and a free kick shortly before half-time curling well wide, much to the glee of the home fans.
The visitors improved in the second half, carving out multiple chances, but Adnan Januzaj, Phil Jones and substitute Robin van Persie all failed to convert them.
As they piled on the pressure, Cambridge goalkeeper Chris Dunn impressed with bravery in the air and with his shot-stopping - making two crucial saves in injury time as the hosts held on for a lucrative replay.
KEY MOMENTS
23’ - HOOF! Di Maria kicks the ball out of the ground. Cambridge fans are giddy.
31’ - CENTIMETRES AWAY! Coulson gets his head to it after it pings around in the mire of the box, and it's only just over the bar!
44’ - MISS! Di Maria takes the free kick and it's always curling wide. Cambridge fans laugh loudly.
47’ - BETTER! Januzaj does better with this, taking on Jones's cross flicked on by Falcao, and hitting it with some zest to Dunn at his near post. 62’ SAVE! Great save from Dunn! He comes out bravely to block Falcao's shot from Carrick's pass, and it deflects over the bar.
71’ - MISS! Van Persie is played in beautifully, and he fires firmly and fiercely over the bar.
84’ - CHANCE! Great cross from Donaldson! He whips it across the face of goal and Phil Jones takes the risk to head it out for a corner - that could easily have gone very wrong.
KEY STATS
Manchester United have scored just one first-half goal across their last six matches in all competitions.
